The author outlines how the word solidarity and the related legal concepts are represented in Serbian Constitutions, as well as in the current Serbian legislation and policy. The word solidarity itself cannot be found in most of Serbian and Yugoslav Constitutions from the middle of the 19th century until today, although most of them provide either only traces or comprehensive guarantees of social rights and refer to concepts such as social justice or the welfare state. The principle of solidarity can be found in numerous legislative texts and policy documents currently in force in the Republic of Serbia and the subject matter of these documents varies greatly. The author focuses on some of them and identifies several areas, besides social rights and support to vulnerable groups, in which solidarity is identified as one of the guiding principles, such as public finances or regional development. Whether solidarity as a legal principle provides for concrete improvements in these areas or is just another political catch phrase remains outside the scope of this analysis.
