Abstract

This paper deals with the criminological aspects of the problem of lethal violence against women, as well as the concept of femicide and its political and legal implications. Authors present the historic perspective of the femicide notion emphasizing its feminist aspect. Thus far, femicide is defined within the context of discrimination and violence against women, including practices as female foeticide, genital mutilation, and on the first place – intimate partner violence resulting in death of women. Femicide, as most extreme form of violence is inherent to patriarchal societies with gender roles sterotypes, but other factors such as poverty, culture of violence, and state institution collapse increase the rate. Due to high rates of femicide in Mexico and other countries of Latin America, international community has focused on the phenomenon looking for best solutions to protect the women from (lethal) violence. The Council of Europe and The European Union have recently adopted resolutions and recommendations on femicide insisting on its eradication not just in Mexico, but globally. The states should collect relevant data on feminicide and improve their mechanisms in order to protect women from (gender) violence. Situation in Serbia has also been analysed, and the lack of relevant data on femicide is obvious. Yet, data collected in the NGO sector, as well as the official data on family violence rates clearly indicate the persistence of the femicidal risk that should be surpressed. Relevant legal provisions regarding most common form of femicide (related to family) violence have been adopted, but the preventive measures and more efficient procedures should be in focus.
