Abstract
In this paper the author analyses the news and media coverage of the prince Paul Karađorđevic’s rehabilitation, which has been decided by the Supreme court in Belgrade in November 2011. By the act of rehabilitation prince Paul, who was declared war criminal by the communist Commission for war crimes, was declared not responsible for the whole range of political activities that, according to communists, once led Yugoslavia straight to the arms of the Axis powers. The media in the Serbian capital greeted the rehabilitation, reporting on the matter as if the rehabilitation was pure embodiment of justice and rightness. But, on the other hand, in almost all analysed media the very basic historical context was perverted or avoided, while the interpretation based on the false facts was accepted as the “correction of historical injustices” which was imposed on Prince Paul. Both in the rehabilitation and in the media the ideologized view on the past events was not avoided, but was replaced by the other ideological paradigm which, unlike the previous one (the communist), has no respect even for the notorious facts, such as dates, chronology, events, persons and their well known activities. Thus, according to media reports and their sources, Yugoslavia joined the Tripartite pact on March 27, 1941 (in fact it happened on March 25); Croat politician Vladko Maček was described as “the leader of the Croat opposition” (in fact he was vice-president of the government); it was told that Maček signed the Protocol on the adherence of Yugoslavia to Tripartite pact (in fact he did not); prince Paul has been dissociated from any activity related to Yugoslav adherence to Tripartite pact (in fact his role was the crucial) etc. This single case (the media coverage of the rehabilitation of prince Paul) reflects the broader ideological context, which is predominantly characterised by the ignorance and a priori reluctant attitude towards anything that belongs to “socialist heritage”, which is the approach that includes the self-understandable acceptance of the anticommunist narrative, no matter how false arguments are.
