Abstract

The research into the quality of prison life was carried out within the project entitled Assessment and possibilities for improving the quality of prison life of prisoners in the Republic of Serbia: Criminological-penological, psychological, sociological, legal and security aspects – PrisonLIFE project, implemented by the Institute of Criminological and Sociological Research and the University in Belgrade - Faculty of Special Education and Rehabilitation, which is supported by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia.* The focus of the PrisonLIFE project is the quality of prison life of convicted persons in Serbian prisons, which affects not only their life in prison, but also their life after release. The quality of prison life is one of the latest concepts of prison research, which unambiguously distinguishes between the prison system as an exclusive means of punishment and as a resocialization resource. Also, the quality of prison life is one of the decisive factors in the effectiveness of the custodial sentence and educational and correctional treatment in prison. Therefore, the PrisonLIFE project was designed to help in the recognition and better understanding of specific manifestations and aspects of the quality of life in Serbian prisons, as well as the possibilities for its evaluation, monitoring and improvement.
